Dublin soldier served from Boer War to Great War

2 Items

My grandfather, Henry John Molloy, served in the British army and saw action in the Boer War and in World War 1. He was born in 1871 and joined the Dublin Fusiliers around 1887. He was claimed out by two of his aunts acting as wards of court. So determined was he to seek adventure as a soldier that he rejoined the Royal Leinster Regiment (D Company, 2nd Battalion) under the name Henry Metcalfe, his mother's maiden name. His correct name was subsequently reinstated and appears on his several medals. His service medals cover the period from the Boer War to the Great War. He was wounded at Ginchy in 1915 but survived and served for the full period of the War. In returning to the front he swopped duties with a colleague and missed the sinking of the Leinster in October, 1918. His former home is now a museum maintained by the Iveagh Heritage Trust. || Collection of service medals from the Boer War to the Great War ; Shaving kit || || Medals awarded to Henry John Molloy in display case || This display case belonged to my grandfather, Henry John Molloy, and contains an array of service medals awarded to him during a lengthy period in the British Army from the time of the Boer War to the end of the Great War. The display case is crowned by an arrangement of spent rifle bullet cases. The first medal on the left in this display was awarded to Thomas Glennon, Henry John's brother-in-law and who served in the same regiment - Royal Leinsters. || Medal || Henry John Molloy || || Trench Life || Shaving Kit belonging to Henry John Molloy
