John was born in 1888 at Appleton Roebuck North Yorkshire. He married Martha on the 2nd Oct 1915 whom he had met whilst working at Wighill vicarage. John joined the Coldstream Guards in December 1915 (Soldier no.18800) and served on the Western front from August 1916. He was seriously wounded on September 20th 1917 at Ypres and as a result of his wounds had to have both legs amputated above the knee. although he had prosthetic legs he actally spent the rest of his life in a wheel chair. Kompanie des Armierungs-Bataillons 22 eingezogen. Bei Stellungskämpfen im Oberelsass wurde er am 7. Januar 1917 durch Granatsplitter so schwer verwundet, dass ihm der rechte Oberschenkel im oberen Drittel amputiert werden musste. Im Februar 1917 erfolgte die Entlassung aus dem Militärdienst, nachdem er als kriegsunbrauchbar eingestuft wurde. Nach dem Krieg ging er auf Wanderschaft (Gesellenjahre), u.a. war er in Köln. Er schrieb viel, zeichnete auch und besaß später in Jonsdorf ein Tabakwarengeschäft. Benedict war drei Mal verheiratet. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs saß er drei Jahre im Gefängnis, weil er in einer Bar beim Trinken Scheiß Führer gesagt hatte. Wilhelm Neubauer wird an der Ostfront verwundet

Wilhelm Neubauer diente im 12. Reserve-Regiment 12 der 93. Division und verlor bereits in den ersten Kriegsmonaten an der Ostfront, wahrscheinlich durch den Einschlag einer Granate sein rechtes Bein, das unterhalb vom Knie amputiert werden musste. Im Oktober wurde er in das Königlichen Reserve-Lazarett des Marien-Hospitals in Düsseldorf eingeliefert. Anschließend kehrte er nach Berlin zurück, zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits mit einer Prothese ausgestattet. Doch er galt in der Familie als Kämpfer, durch seine Amputation ließ er sich nicht entmutigen. In Berlin wurde er zwischen 1916-1918 zum Laboranten und Pfleger an den Heilstätten Wittenau umgeschult. Neubauer war schon vor dem Krieg verheiratet mit Pauline, geb. Lehmann (29.5.1886-2.9.1958). Aus der Ehe gingen zwei Kinder hervor, eine Tochter und ein Sohn. || Familienfotografien; Feldpostkarten: a) Postkarte vom 11. Johannes Koop aus Alsenborn wird an der Westfront verwundet

Johannes Koop (1895-1957) war Zigarrenmacher aus einem Pfälzer Dorf, der sich auch in der Sozialdemokratie engagierte. Eingezogen wurde er bereits zu Kriegsbeginn. Er hatte zwei Brüder, die ebenfalls am Krieg teilnahmen. Den Krieg machte er bis zum Ende mit. Zunächst war er beim bayerischen Truppenübungsplatz Hammelburg stationiert. Er wurde im Anschluss an die Westfront beordert, um gegen den Franzmann zu kämpfen, wie es bei den Pfälzern hieß. 1916 wurde er verwundet, in dessen Folge ihm der linke Unterschenkel amputiert werden musste. Lange Zeit verbrachte er im Lazarett. Später wurde er im Stubendienst verwendet. Als er aus dem Krieg nach Hause zurückkehrte, heiratete er seine Freundin Christina, mit der er zu Kriegsbeginn schon so gut wie verlobt war. Das Paar hatte einen Sohn (1923-2011) und eine Tochter (1926-1989). Er arbeitete weiter als Zigarrenmacher. Wenn bei Familienfeiern unter den Brüdern vom Ersten Weltkrieg gesprochen wurde, klang es nach einem großen Abenteuer: ...Als wir noch bei St. Avold schanzen waren.... || Zwölf Fotos und Postkarten aus der Kriegszeit von Johannes Koop.

FRAD043-003 cousins Bernard et Pagnac

Les deux arrières-grands-mères du témoins étaient soeurs, famille Chambon de Vals. Leurs enfants Henri Bernard, de Vals-près-Le Puy 35 rue des Ecoles, et Pierre Pagnac, de Vals 2 rue des Jardiniers, cousins germains, tous deux au front, s'écrivaient pendant la guerre. Tous deux étaient mariés, Henri Bernard jeune marié, s'étant marié à 36 ans juste avant la guerre. Pierre Pagnac apprend avant son cousin que celui-ci est père, et le lui annonce dans une lettre conservée. Le bébé fils de Henri Bernard épousa longtemps après sa cousine, fille de Pierre Pagnac, le témoin est leur fils. Les carrières militaires ne sont connues que très incomplètement. Pierre Pagnac part en août 1914, un peu auparavant, entendant les cloches sonner, moissonnant à la faucille, un vieux montant l'après midi lui avait dit auje Pierre, la guerra es désclarada ; lors de son départ l'eau du Dolézon montait,on pouvait que quai la toucher avec la main ab mei mos, ab mas mas. Territorial et plus âgé, 30 ans, Henri Bernard reste longtemps à l'arrière, au 10e Régiment territorial d'artillerie à pied 12e batterie en décembre 1914 et en janvier 1915, au fort Montconin à Irigny, Rhône. En septembre-octobre 1915 à La Tronche. Puis il monte à Verdun. Henri et sa femme Louise, et leurs proches échangent des nouvelles du front et du pays. En novembre 1915, une épouse annonce à distance à son mari qu'on lui a volé des pommes de terres qu'elle avait récoltées ; son mari lui répondit ils ne sont pas tous à la guerre ; lui se plaint du froid et de la boue, de coucher sur la paille, des poux. (Tradition orale), faisant des terrassements à la pelle, tendant la pelle à son camarade, le camarade au même moment est tué d'une balle et le manche de pelle cassé, en occitan ou patois local, aguere mas lo manche je n'avais plus que le manche. Un beau-frère, Gravier, d'Ours près Le Puy, revient amputé des orteils. Comme tant d'autres amputés, il disait, en occitan ou patois local, Sente meis arpious que bougen, je sens mes pieds qui bougent. La pochette conservée n'a pas été transmise, mais retrouvée par hasard dans une grange. Le grand-père Henri avait sa carte d'ancien combattant et fut pensionné ; il mourut en 1948. En arrachant ensemble les pommes de terre à la maison, le grand-père maternel Pierre Pagnac parlait un peu de la guerre à son petit-fils. Peu. Un autre habitant de Vals, voisin, montrait ses blessures ; sans clavicule, après quelques mois d'hôpital il était remonté au front. La blessure ne l'empêchait pas de travailler ses pommes de terres. || Pochette de toile de bâche cirée, 12 x 18 cm vertical, remplie de documents relatifs à l'année 1915. Ces documents ont appartenu aux grands-pères de la contributrice. De Jules Heckendorn, on ne sait presque rien, sinon ce qu'indique son livret de famille (né le 15/11/1879 à Roggenhausen, mort le 14/07/1916 à Flers). Jules Kroepfle est originaire de Bergholtz (68). Sa carte du combattant mentionne qu'il a combattu en France, puis sur le front russe. Blessé à la jambe, il fut amputé et soigné à l'hôpital de la marine à Hambourg. Courrier signé J.JOFFRE attribuant la Médaille Militaire avec palme à mon oncle || Après les rudes combats qui se sont déroulés le 4 octobre 1914 dans la région d'Albert (Somme),mon oncle très grièvement blessé a failli être laissé sur le champ de bataille. L'infirmier découragé par tous ces blessés qu'il ramassait et qui mourraient quelques instant plus tard,et qu'il n'arrivait à sauver, n'a, dans un premier temps, pas voulu ramasser mon oncle étant donné son état désespéré, mais il s'est repris et a fait transférer mon oncle à l'hôpital d'Albert. Mon oncle s'est remis peu à peu de sa grave blessure:une balle entrée sous la clavicule et ressortie à quelques millimètres de la colonne vertébrale lui a perforé le poumon et a cassé quelques côtes, lui faisant perdre l'usage de son bras droit. Il n'a pas été amputé du bras mais l'a porté en écharpe tout le restant de sa vie ne pouvant s'en servir. La famille n'a jamais su le nom de cet infirmier mais lui a été toujours très reconnaissante, de son revirement après son petit mouvement de découragement bien compréhensible.

From September 1916 to spring 1917, the non-commissioned officer wrote field postcards to his wife from the front in France, which he probably decorated with straw baskets he had made himself. After the war, he continued to work as a police officer in Eschweiler.

In 1940, nurse Grete Ahlers wrote down her memories of her time with the Red Cross from 1914 to 1917. When war broke out, she drove through destroyed towns, via Brussels, Leuven, Mons and Cambrai to her destination Chauny. In December 1914 she was ordered to Kutno in the east, where she worked in a former trade school turned military hospital and was accommodated by a Polish doctor and his wife.

Marie Louise Eudoxie was a nurse at the front. She was born in Molenstede August 3, 1885 and married to Pierre Joseph Driessens. Pierre was an ambulance driver and died in a bomb strike at the front in East and/or West Flanders. Eudoxie had been forced to flee to England during World War I but has returned later to help out at the front as a nurse.

Working on the merchant vessel as a radio operator, exempted Alfred Cooper, a conscientious objector, from active service and made him travel around the world. The images he took include Venice, New Orleans, Montreal, Durban and more. After the Second World War Alfred became a professional photographer.


August 2021: Fall of the Iron Curtain

2021 marks the 32nd anniversary of the Fall of the Iron Curtain and on 23rd August 1989 two million people of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined hands in the biggest demonstration in history - the Baltic Way - a human chain stretching over six hundred kilometers connecting the Baltic capitals Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. Here is a selection describing these events.

Photos, diaries and correspondence of brothers Jan and Rudolf, two out of six Václav siblings. In 1915 they both enlisted in Brno. Jan was killed in the battle of Passo Tonale on 13 June 1918. Rudolf was captured in Russia but returned home after the war and started a family.
