
Women's History Month Run [ 8-31 March 2025 ]
On the occasion of Women's History Month, Europeana Transcribe offers you a chance to disclose less well-known women’s stories and make them more visible and accessible.
In this special Run we’ve selected a number of letters, diaries and documents written by women to transcribe and enrich. Prizes will be awarded!

Since 2016, Europeana has celebrated Women’s History Month by highlighting the stories of important women in history, creating and promoting editorial to improve the representation of women on its website.
Europeana highlights and publishes interviews featuring women in a variety of fields in the cultural heritage sector from the music industry to maritime and more on Pro. Look out for new features throughout March.
This year, Europeana collaborates with Paris Art Collective on a Women’s History online collage prompt and a collage workshop in Paris on the 8th of March. Europeana will also have its instagram taken over by a variety of women’s organisations so be sure to look out for that.

Adelina Patti (1843-1919)
Adelina Patti was a famed Italian soprano known for her flawless technique and roles in Verdi, Rossini, and Bellini operas. One of the highest-paid singers of her time, she remains a legendary opera figure.
Else Dormitzer (1877-1958)
Else Dormitzer was a German-Jewish writer, journalist, and activist. She was known for her literary works, advocacy for women's rights, and involvement in Jewish community organizations. Forced to flee Nazi Germany, she continued her work in exile, preserving Jewish history and culture.
Ema Destinnová (1878-1930)
Ema Destinnová was a celebrated Czech soprano known for her powerful voice and performances at top opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York. A patriot, she supported Czech independence and was briefly placed under house arrest during World War I.
Zofia Smoluchowska (1881-1959)
Zofia Smoluchowska, often better known as the wife of physicist Marian Smoluchowski (1872-1917) and the daughter of Marian Baraniecki (1848-1895), a physicist and mathematician, was a remarkable woman in her own right. He contributed to her husband's work by editing and proofreading his scientific papers. She also engaged in correspondence with some of the greatest minds of her time.
Ada Adler (1878-1946)
Ada Adler was a Danish classical scholar and librarian known for her work on ancient Greek texts. She is best remembered for her critical edition of the Suda, a Byzantine encyclopedia, which remains a valuable resource for scholars today.
Gabrielle Krauss (1842-1906)
Gabrielle Krauss was an Austrian-born French operatic soprano. She gained fame performing in major European opera houses, particularly in Paris. Gabrielle was a leading soprano at the Paris Opera for 13 years. She created major roles in operas by Verdi, Wagner, Saint-Saëns, and many more.
