A British sergeant major's family
1 Item
Although the family pictured on the front of this postcard visited a photographer’s studio in order to be photographed, the name of the studio is not given, nor is the family named. A young child is pictured sitting on the arm of his or her mother’s chair. The badges on the child’s soldier–father’s upper arm tell us that he is a sergeant major, but the details of the badge between the crown and three stripes are not discernible. He has a single wound stripe on the cuff of his left sleeve, indicating that he has been wounded once. He also has a medal ribbon above his left-hand breast pocket and a lanyard around his left shoulder. || A real photographic postcard || || A British sergeant major and his family || Photograph || Front

Pictured here in an unnamed photographic studio are a young girl and her soldier–father. The three stripes on his upper sleeves tell us that he is a sergeant, and he wears a red-cross armband or brassard. His shoulder title is difficult to make out, but may be that of the RAMC (the Royal Army Medical Corps). A medal ribbon is also visible above his left pocket. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || Front || A British soldier and his daughter

The printed information on the reverse of this real photographic postcard states that it was produced by ‘Van Ralty Studios’ of ‘Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, Oldham, Bolton, & &’. The family whose photograph appears on the front comprises a small boy with his mother and father. The three stripes on his soldier–father’s sleeve tell us that he is a sergeant. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a British sergeant and his family
