A British sergeant and his family

The printed information on the reverse of this real photographic postcard states that it was produced by ‘Van Ralty Studios’ of ‘Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, Oldham, Bolton, & &’. The family whose photograph appears on the front comprises a small boy with his mother and father. The three stripes on his soldier–father’s sleeve tell us that he is a sergeant.

A British sergeant and his family

1 Item

A real photographic postcard || A family of three are portrayed in a studio setting on the front of this postcard, but the name of the studio is not given, nor do we know the names of the girl, her mother or her soldier–father. From the stripes and crown on his sleeves, we know that the soldier is a first-class staff sergeant; the details of his visible shoulder title are, however, illegible. || || Front || A photograph of a British soldier and his family || Photograph

A British sergeant and his family

A real photographic postcard || There is nothing on the front or back of this real photographic postcard to identify the family pictured, or the studio that produced it. Although the photograph of a small girl dressed in her best, her mother and her soldier–father has not aged well, certain details can be noted, such as the girl’s necklace and her mother’s rings. Her soldier–father is wearing a well-worn uniform, and the three stripes on his sleeves tell us that he is a sergeant. He also wears a white lanyard. His cap rests on the table beside him, but the details of the cap badge can’t be made out. || || Photograph || Front

A British sergeant and his family

1 Item

Neither the pictured family nor the name and address of the photographer’s studio in which they are shown are given on this real photographic postcard. A small girl stands between her parents, leaning against her seated mother. Her father’s uniform bears a sergeant’s stripes, as well as a medal ribbon above his left breast pocket. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a British sergeant and his family
