A British sergeant and his daughter
Pictured here in an unnamed photographic studio are a young girl and her soldier–father. The three stripes on his upper sleeves tell us that he is a sergeant, and he wears a red-cross armband or brassard. His shoulder title is difficult to make out, but may be that of the RAMC (the Royal Army Medical Corps). A medal ribbon is also visible above his left pocket.

A real photographic postcard || Both father and daughter look ill at ease in this photograph, which was produced, as is printed on the reverse, by ‘GALE’S STUDIOS LTD / BRANCHES EVERYWHERE’, these being listed as ‘Manchester / Glasgow / Liverpool / Blackpool / Leeds / Nottingham / Birmingham / Leicester / Cardiff / Bristol / Newcastle-on-Tyne / Portsmouth / Sheffield / Etc. Etc.’. The girl wears a mobcap and a light-coloured dress, and stands rather awkwardly on a chair next to her father. He is wearing a British soldier’s uniform and a white lanyard, but his uniform has no other distinguishing features. || || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and his daughter

A real photographic postcard || Although we don’t know in which studio this British corporal and his family were photographed, or their family name, we do know the baby’s first name and age, as well as the date when the photograph was taken, thanks to a handwritten note on the back: ‘4th March. 1918 / Sheila 6 months old.’. || || A photograph of a British corporal and his wife and daughter || Photograph

A real photographic postcard || A family of three are portrayed in a studio setting on the front of this postcard, but the name of the studio is not given, nor do we know the names of the girl, her mother or her soldier–father. From the stripes and crown on his sleeves, we know that the soldier is a first-class staff sergeant; the details of his visible shoulder title are, however, illegible. || || Front || A photograph of a British soldier and his family || Photograph
