John Robert Ratcliffe, born 15 August 1893 in Blackburn and died February 1972 in Blackburn. Private in the East Lancashire Regiment.
The great uncle of the contributor, Jean Dunston. Her maternal grandmother's brother.
Cushion cover made which John Robert Ratcliffe was in a convalescent Hospital in Godalming, Surrey, after being mustard gassed on the Somme. He used the cushion in the different hospitals he visited on his journey home.
The contributor used the cushion of here children as babies. She stopped using it in the 1970s/1980s.
Collection includes two photos, two medals and an Oddfellows Award.

A very fragile fine silk cushion cover with appliqued flowers and embroidered stems and leaves. The silk is trimmed with lace. This cushion cover, along with other items, was kept by my grandmother and mother because my grandfather brought it back from his time in the war.
