Sergeant Trumpeter Dean was the father of the contributor. He was born in 1873 at Wellington in Somerset. He served in the Royal Horse Artillery in the Boer War. He was then in the army in 1914. In one of the photos he is wearing a greatcoat with rank stripes on the lower sleeve - it's one of the few ranks to have stripes on lower sleeve.
Group photo shows soldiers with drums and another photo showing a Sergeant Tailor stated on photo.
On the back of one card a story is related in which a soldier was killed on the retreat Mons ? and his daughter shot herself.

An informal group photograph in front of bell tents, James Torrins with colleagues. And a formal group photograph of The Royal Field Artillery, A sub section, with mascot. Torrins was assigned to look after the mascot and horses. What I do remember about my grandfather (James Torrins) is that he was wounded in France and got discharged. He kept the shrapnel, but I can't find it! Photographs of Robert Maxwell with family and with horses; certificates and other documentation; handwritten poem called The Parting Rosary. || Robert Maxwell was my Grandfather. He was born in 1887 and served in the Royal Artillery in WWI He had a totla of 14 children and was married 3 times. The fmaily story is that Robert was driving horses and mules. He was caught in heavy shelling and his animals were killed but he had a lucky escape! He worked for the Guinness brewery in Dublin and died in 1956.
