Portrait photo of Patrick with his father Thomas; Discharge Certificate; Character Certificate; Postcard from Malta (Hospital); Postcard from Malta (Church of Bones); Postcard from Salonika; Postcard from Albert; Postcard from Malta (Welsh Rifles); Postcard of a French Military Hospital; Postcard of (?)-Grenay, Pas de Calais.
My wife's grandfather Patrick served with The Camerononians, 11. Scottish Rifles. Patrick enlisted in 1915 in Glasgow, Scotland, aged 27 but gave his age as 24. He was a Private, serial number 201389. Family lore says he left home and joined the Army to escape from his Step-Mother with whom he did not get along. His regiment was sent via Boulogne to the Albert, Somme area in France but were very soon shifted to the Balkans theatre in late 1915. He suffered gas injuries on the Salonika/Macedonia Front, and also caught dysentery. He was hospitalised in Mtarfa Military Hospital in Malta at some stage. He was married in Dublin in 1917 while on leave to Ellen Cooke (1883 - 1931). He returned to Dublin after his Army discharge in 1919 and with Ellen had two children, May and Frank (my late father-in-law). Patrick's dark brown hair turned white from his war experiences, then went black. He did not speak much at all about the War. He was widowed after only 14 years of marriage. Patrick worked as a Labourer and Porter in the Dublin markets, but his health declined progressively from the gassing and the disease caught in the Balkans campaign. He died aged only 52 and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, unfortunately in a common grave with no marker. Our family has managed to keep several items from Patrick's WWI service, including one of his two medals (War & Victory). Patrick is not forgotten.

Memorabilia of Patrick Drury | Kings Liverpool Regiment

1 Item

My grand uncle, Patrick Drury, was probably from the Old Watergate area of Limerick, Ireland. I don't know anything about his life before the War. He joined the King's Liverpool Regiment (Private No. 9238). The photograph on the postcard here is probably of Patrick though it may be his brother Joseph (Joseph is the name given on the back). Patrick died during the War, though we don't know how. My father only spoke about this once. The postcard has Joseph Drury, Royal Munster Fusiliers, ? II Battalion, Limburg (?), Germany. This could still relate to Patrick if the regiment was decimated as people were moved to new regiments when this happened. || (1) Document accompanying the 1914-15 Star medal; (2) Document accompanying the Victory medal;(3) Medals: 1914-15 Star medal & Victory medal; (4) Postcard with photograph possibly of Patrick Drury; (5) Memorial scroll
