Charlie Varney

Charlie Varney was born in 1898 and came from Horley just outside Banbury. He joined the Royal Artillery and was then seconded as a gunner to the Navy. He survived the 1st World War and in 1919 was sent to Afghanistan. The contributor's grandmother married Charlie after her first fiance died in the war.
