Charlie Varney
Charlie Varney was born in 1898 and came from Horley just outside Banbury. He joined the Royal Artillery and was then seconded as a gunner to the Navy. He survived the 1st World War and in 1919 was sent to Afghanistan. The contributor's grandmother married Charlie after her first fiance died in the war. Charlie was a distant relative.
