In 1911, my great uncle, Archibald Frank Mortimer, emigrated from Chiswick, England to New Zealand to work as a farmer. In 1914, he enlisted in the New Zealand Canterbury Mounted Rifles as a trooper (7/881). Because many New Zealanders had migrated there, they were very interested in their homeland and recruitment was easy. Recruitment levels were high and conscription was not brought in until 1916. He went to Egypt on 14th February 1915 where a lot of his comrades perished. Originally intended for the defence of Suez, they were diverted to Gallipoli under General Sir Ian Hamilton's Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. With other ANZACs, he was involved in fighting at Chunuk Bair on the 6th August and most of the rest of the month for little gain of territory. On 27th August 1915, he was involved in an attack on Kaiakij Aghala. He was killed in action and his death was officially listed on 28th August. Of the 16 officers and 280 others in his unit, only 1 officer and 39 others survived.

ΚΑΡΤ ΠΟΣΤΑΛ || Επιστολικό δελτάριο με λευκό περιμετρικό πλαίσιο, όπου απεικονίζεται η οδό Θεσσαλονίκη στα Γιαννιτσά με στρατιώτες και κατοίκους και φέρει τον τίτλο στα γαλλικά “YENIDZE (Vardar) – Rue de Salonique”, καθέτως αριστερά, το όνομα του εκδότη, Phototypie E.Huguet από το Chateau-du-Loir (Sarthe) της Γαλλίας. Στην οπίσθια πλευρά, το κείμενο ενός Γάλλου στρατιώτη που στέλνει νέα του στις 13/3/1918 στη μητέρα του. Ακολουθεί το κείμενο : “Vertekojo (?) le 13-3-1918 Ma chère Maman Je t'envoie une petite carte pour te donner de mes nouvelles qui sont très bonnes. Je pense qu'il en est de même de ton côté. Je peux recevoir de tes nouvelles demain. Il fait par ici un temps superbe. Il en est sans doute de même pour Cancale. Embrasse bien le petit Albert et ses petites soeurs. Bien des choses à Joseph et aux amis. Demain, je t'ecrirai plus longuemment. Ton petit gars qui t'aime et qui t'embrasse bien fort. ” || || Front || Postcard || Μητέρα || || Back || Postcard

ΚΑΡΤ ΠΟΣΤΑΛ || Επιστολικό δελτάριο με λευκό περιμετρικό πλαίσιο, μέσα στο οποίο φέρει το τίτλο στα γαλλικά : “Ancien Cimetière, Mosquée, Minaret et Horloge à Yenidze (Vardar), καθέτως στην αριστερή πλευρά : Phototypie E.Huguet, Chateau-du-Loir (Sarthre) και πάνω δεξιά, φέρει μια ταχυδρομική σφραγίδα με ημερομηνία : 25-3-18. Στην οπίσθια όψη, η επιστολή ενός Γάλλου στρατιώτη από τα Γιαννιτσά στην μητέρα του, κυρία V.
