A British corporal and his wife and daughter
A real photographic postcard
Although we don’t know in which studio this British corporal and his family were photographed, or their family name, we do know the baby’s first name and age, as well as the date when the photograph was taken, thanks to a handwritten note on the back: ‘4th March. 1918 / Sheila 6 months old.’.

The printed details on the reverse of this real photographic postcard tell us that the family pictured on the front visited ‘The Ideal Studios, 514-516 Oxford St., W. London’ in order to be photographed. Seated in a chair, a young mother supports a baby on her lap. Standing to the right is the army child’s father. The two stripes on his left sleeve tell us that he is a corporal, and the badge above them signifies that he is a Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) medical orderly. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a British corporal and his family

A real photographic postcard || The family pictured on the front of this real photographic postcard comprises a small boy, holding a ball on a string; his mother; and his soldier–father. The single chevron on the soldier’s upper right-hand sleeve proclaims his rank as a corporal. The three chevrons on his lower right-hand sleeve are overseas service stripes, signifying three years’ service overseas after 31 December 1914. He also appears to have a medal ribbon above his left-hand breast pocket. The name and address of the studio that produced this photograph is printed on the reverse: ‘Parker Herbert, 63 London Rd., Derby in Derbyshire, & 32 New Buildings, Hinckley in Leicester’. Handwritten on the right is a note presumably identifying the boy’s parents: ‘Hink & Mrs Hinkley. / Derby. / (Crumb) /. || || Front || Lance Corporal Hinkley and his family || Photograph
