A British corporal and his family
A real photographic postcard
The family pictured on the front of this real photographic postcard comprises a small boy, holding a ball on a string; his mother; and his soldier–father. The single chevron on the soldier’s upper right-hand sleeve proclaims his rank as a corporal. The three chevrons on his lower right-hand sleeve are overseas service stripes, signifying three years’ service overseas after 31 December 1914. He also appears to have a medal ribbon above his left-hand breast pocket. The name and address of the studio that produced this photograph is printed on the reverse: ‘Parker Herbert, 63 London Rd., Derby in Derbyshire, & 32 New Buildings, Hinckley in Leicester’. Handwritten on the right is a note presumably identifying the boy’s parents: ‘Hink & Mrs Hinkley. / Derby. / (Crumb) /.
