A British soldier | in mourning | and his family.
It has been cropped out in this view, but a white border surrounds the photograph printed on the front of this postcard, with the faded details of the studio that produced it running along the bottom. The printed information on the reverse supplies further information: ‘Photo by CROWN STUDIOS, LONDON & PROVINCES. / Further copies can be had by quoting No.’ (The number ‘13289’ has been pencilled below, which may, or may not, be the ‘No.’ in question.) Back to the photograph on the other side, and a young boy stands at the forefront of the carefully posed scene. His seated mother is shown in profile, gazing at her son. His soldier–father’s uniform is notable for the black-covered button on his tunic, which indicates that he is mourning the death of someone close to him.

This larger-than-postcard-sized photograph has been glued to the centre of a brown-toned cardboard mount (cropped out here) bearing the details of the photographic studio that produced it: ‘USA STUDIOS’, ‘London W & Provincial Branches’. The solemn-looking family pictured comprises two young girls, dressed alike in white, with ribbons in their hair, their mother and their soldier–father. || A photograph || || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and his family

The small child sitting on the table on the right of this photograph must have moved while it was being taken because her face is a little blurry. Her soldier–father stands behind her, while her mother sits on the left, holding what appears to be a newspaper. No information is given on either the front or back of this real photographic postcard to help us identify either the family or the photographic studio that produced their portrait. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and family

A real photographic postcard || This real photographic postcard shows six children, who have been photographed with their parents in a garden setting. The oldest girl has been given the central seat, while three of her younger siblings have lined up alongside her and their parents. Their mother holds a baby, and their soldier–father, a toddler. The outline of his cap badge resembles that of the Essex Regiment. There is nothing on either the front or back of this family photograph to indicate where it was taken, or the family’s identity. || || A photograph of a British soldier and his family || Photograph
