'A kiss from your daddy.'
This postcard belongs to the category known as ‘silks’ on account of its silk embroidery on a gauzy fabric. The embroidered details on this particular silk, which has been mounted within a cream border, include the legend ‘A KISS FROM YOUR DADDY’, violets, the Union Jack and the French flag (the ‘Tricolore’). The central flap can be lifted in the manner of an envelope’s flap; inside is a small rectangular card on which is printed a terrace scene surrounded by four-leafed clovers, along with the legend ‘A Loving Birthday Greetings sic’, with the French ‘Tricolore’ and the British Red Ensign flags being crossed in the bottom right-hand corner. On the reverse is printed ‘CARTE POSTALE’. There is a message written in pencil, which reads: ‘Dear Daughter / Just a line to let you know I have sent a P.C. to your Uncle John so with Best of Luck / I remain your loving Dad / good night tell Mamma’.

A British sentimental postcard || Pictured on main portion of this black-and-white postcard are a girl and her mother, both dressed in white, apparently reading a letter together. Above them is the legend ‘A Message of Love Daddy’, with a flower depicted between this and an oval inset photograph of a British soldier shouldering his gun. The verse to the right of the mother and child reads, ‘Sitting at the Cottage door / Thinking of you far away / Our love for you grows more and more / And for your safe return we pray’. The ink of the postmarks stamped on the back of this postcard have leached through to the front (they say ‘PLYMOUTH / 7 – / 12 FEB 18’ and ‘BUY NATIONAL WAR BONDS’). The initials of the artist who drew the illustration (‘C.T.N.’) headed ‘With Love from Daddy.’ can be seen beneath the British soldier who is portrayed embracing his small daughter. The postcard has been addressed in black ink to ‘Miss Elsie Butler / 21 Victoria St / Reading’, and the message reads, ‘Dear Elsie Butler / Thank you for your PC. I have sent a box of 6 for mother tell her to give you two each no more this time from your ever loving father ? H Butler’. The typeset details on the back include ‘Copyright Printed and Published by J. Salmon ? England / E.
