Serbia at War

118 Items

My parents were Serbian and I collect medals so I have a particular interest in Serbian medals and other artefacts concerning the war in Serbia and the British presence there. The Oxfordshire Light Infantry fought at the battles at Lake Doiran in 1917 and 1918; 2800 British soldiers were killed and 2100 are buried in the war cemetery there. FIDAC was an organisation of European allies (Federation Interalliee Des Anciens Combattants), linking war veterans from Allied countries. In 1929 it was the British turn to head the organisation and in 1930 they met in Serbia. || Identity book for Krsta Balitch, Serbian refugee; medal for Oxfordshire Light Infantry in Serbia; Bulgarian medal from 1915-1917, referring to the Battle of Doiran; British Legion Serbian medal; FIDAC pin badge; cigarette silks of Serbian flags issued in 1916; letter sent by the Serbian organisation for war invalids to the Daily Mail, and badge 1912-1918; badge from Liverpool and district flag day 1915; Scottish Women's 'Allies Hospital Day' fund raising badges; Serbian Relief Fund flag (Churchill and Asquith were members); carved wooden box in shape of book with detachable spine - Serbian trench art; carved box with Serbian eagle, souvenir dated 1916 (refugees would be sent to public schools and this one might have a connection with Eton). An inscription on the inside read 'Only unity will save the Serbs'. Orange cutter made from a round of ammunition (Austrian) and a British pocket button, dated 1918; an inter-allied wound badge, showing the arms of the allies including Serbia, Japan, France. This was not made in Britain but was privately produced, probably by a Frenchman; die-cast stamp block plus stamps; French magazine 'J'ai vu', November 1915, issue on Serbia and King Peter I; pdf of collected images. || || A collection of artefacts concerning Serbia || Multiple || Propaganda || Remembrance || Refugees || Home Front || A collection of items concerning Serbia during the First World War, the campaigns, support for the Serbian cause on the home front and memorabilia from displaced Serbians. || Serbia || English || Français || || Propaganda || Paris || J'ai Vu || Publication || Home Front || French news magazine, issue year 2 no. 53, dated 20 November 1915 on King Peter of Serbia || Français || The King of Serbia

O.A.S. badge for Serbia

2 Items

The O.A.S. ('On Active Service') Fund of Tasmania was an Australian charity that raised money to buy provisions or requisites as comforts for fighting fit soldiers, as opposed to those charities that worked with sick, hospitalised, or disabled soldiers. From May 1916, the O.A.S. would have a Button Day on a monthly basis and each month would have a different theme or design for the button badge, and the money raised from the sale of these badges would be used to buy comforts for soldiers on the front. This particular example is themed on Serbia, one of the Allied Nations of the Great War. || An O.A.S. fund-raising badge on the theme of Serbia. The front of the badge has the Serbian flag in the centre and the words 'O.A.S' and 'Serbia' at the top and bottom. respectively. The back of the badge has the words: 'Alfred E. S. Stokes, Maker, 228 Pitt St. Sydney'.

'Slavo Day for Serbia' badge

3 Items

This is a paper-card badge with pin fastener for a Serbian flag/charity/benefit day. It says 'Slavo Day for Serbia' at the top, where 'slavo' is the Serbian word for 'glory' or 'honour'. Beneath the text is the Serbian heraldic eagle, and the impression on the blank back shows how the design was embossed onto the card. || 'Slavo Day for Serbia'
