Serbia at War
My parents were Serbian and I collect medals so I have a particular interest in Serbian medals and other artefacts concerning the war in Serbia and the British presence there.
The Oxfordshire Light Infantry fought at the battles at Lake Doiran in 1917 and 1918; 2800 British soldiers were killed and 2100 are buried in the war cemetery there.
FIDAC was an organisation of European allies (Federation Interalliee Des Anciens Combattants), linking war veterans from Allied countries. In 1929 it was the British turn to head the organisation and in 1930 they met in Serbia.
Identity book for Krsta Balitch, Serbian refugee; medal for Oxfordshire Light Infantry in Serbia; Bulgarian medal from 1915-1917, referring to the Battle of Doiran;
British Legion Serbian medal; FIDAC pin badge; cigarette silks of Serbian flags issued in 1916; letter sent by the Serbian organisation for war invalids to the Daily Mail, and badge 1912-1918;
badge from Liverpool and district flag day 1915; Scottish Women's 'Allies Hospital Day' fund raising badges; Serbian Relief Fund flag (Churchill and Asquith were members);
carved wooden box in shape of book with detachable spine - Serbian trench art; carved box with Serbian eagle, souvenir dated 1916 (refugees would be sent to public schools and this one might have a connection with Eton). An inscription on the inside read 'Only unity will save the Serbs'. Orange cutter made from a round of ammunition (Austrian) and a British pocket button, dated 1918; an inter-allied wound badge, showing the arms of the allies including Serbia, Japan, France. This was not made in Britain but was privately produced, probably by a Frenchman; die-cast stamp block plus stamps; French magazine 'J'ai vu', November 1915, issue on Serbia and King Peter I; pdf of collected images.
