The face of a child

1 Item

Harry Robbins was just a boy! After lying about his young age, (15 years) he proudly joined the war effort and was transported from the Berkshire countryside village of Tilehurst to the death and destruction of war. He never came back! His mother wept as many did, his brother survived to become my grandfather. Just another face of a child, but it needs to be remembered, it needs to remind us of sacrifice, may that face of courage, loyalty and dedication to his country remain in our memories forever. Harry Robbins was a private in the Wiltshire Regiment. His regimental number was 36938. He was killed April 10th 1918 (Flanders) aged 17 years old. Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium Died in hands of Germans, originally buried in La Basse-ville German cemetery, then after Armistice, his body moved and laid to rest in Strand. Hainaut, Belgium. A mother and child photographed in Leeds.

1 Item

The photographer’s name and address is printed on the back of this photographic postcard: ‘Harrison’s Studio, 68 Meadow Road, Leeds in Yorkshire’. The subjects are a woman and her child. The mother’s wedding ring is clearly visible, as are the two brooches that she wears: a cameo and, beneath it, a sweetheart brooch. The sweetheart brooch takes the form of a rifle, upon which is superimposed the badge of the regiment in which her husband was presumably serving. The details of the badge are indistinct, but the shape points to a crown-surmounted rose of Yorkshire, which may indicate the badge of the Yorkshire Dragoons (Queen’s Own). || || Photograph || A photograph of a mother and child from Leeds. || English
