He is holding a Union flag, alongside which is the Stars and Stripes of the United States of America. ‘Oilette’ can be discerned in the bottom right-hand corner. French cockade with other, Allied colours. || This is a decorative cockade in the colours of France, the blue-white-red ribbons at the top, and also Belgium, with the black-yellow-red, of Great Britain, with the red ensign colours, and Serbia, with the red-blue-white. The metal digits showing the year '1917' is sewn onto the central ribbon.
