'We're Allies!'

A boy wearing a sailor suit smiles out at us from the front of this postcard, beneath the legend ‘Is’nt sic it jolly? We’re Allies!’. He is holding a Union flag, alongside which is the Stars and Stripes of the United States of America. ‘Oilette’ can be discerned in the bottom right-hand corner. The typeset text on the reverse states: ‘Copyright London. “ISN’T IT JOLLY?” / Photo: Downer. / Raphael Tuck & Sons’ “OILETTE” Postcard No 3132 / ART PUBLISHERS TO THEIR MAJESTIES THE KING & QUEEN.’ / By Appointment / Printed in England’. The USA entered the First World War on 6 April 1917.

The writing on the back shows that it was made by F. Roche, of 395 8th Avenue, New York, USA, and there is also text in French which reads: 'Souvenir de la Guerre 1914 Drapeaux Des Allies Patente'. Interestingly, the text on both the front and back of the badge are in French, though it was manufactured in America at least a couple of years before the US joined the war.
