A small boy with a big gun
A photograph
This solemn-looking boy has been photographed outside, in front of a tree, holding a rifle that is almost as long as he is tall. He is wearing a British soldier’s cap, although probably not an adult-sized one; in addition, the badge that adorns it looks more like a sweetheart brooch than an army-issue cap badge. There is nothing on the front or back of the photograph to tell us who the boy is, or where he was pictured.

A small boy dressed as a British soldier.

This photograph has not aged well, particularly not the top half, including the face of the small boy who is the subject of this photograph. He is wearing a replica British soldier’s uniform, complete with ‘medal ribbons’, gloves and swagger stick. He has been photographed in a studio setting, and rests his left arm on a child-sized chair. There is nothing on the reverse to tell us who he is, or where he was photographed. Even if he is far too young to be the real thing, he looks delighted to be dressed as a British Army soldier, maybe wishing to emulate his father and/or other older male relatives. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a boy dressed as a British soldier

Apart from an apparent code stating ‘B2.6’, there is nothing printed on the back of this postcard to tell us in which photographic studio the small boy pictured on the front posed for his photograph. He has been dressed for the occasion in an approximation of a British soldier’s uniform, a white lanyard and toy rifle being notable details. The outline of his cap badge resembles the shape formed by the combined sphinx and wreath of the Gloucestershire Regiment’s ‘back badge’. || A photographic postcard. || || A photographic postcard with a photograph of a boy dressed as a British soldier. || Photograph
