A British corporal and his family

A real photographic postcard
The two army children in this photograph appear to have been dressed in their best outfits in order to have their photograph taken with their parents. Their smartly clothed mother sits between them, while their soldier–father stands at the back, placing a protective hand on his son’s shoulder. His cap badge is indistinct, but the two chevrons on each of his sleeves indicate that he holds the rank of corporal. Although printed on a postcard mount, there is no written information to indicate where this photograph was taken, or the family members’ identities.

A British corporal and his family

1 Item

A real photographic postcard || The family pictured on the front of this real photographic postcard comprises a small boy, holding a ball on a string; his mother; and his soldier–father. The single chevron on the soldier’s upper right-hand sleeve proclaims his rank as a corporal. The three chevrons on his lower right-hand sleeve are overseas service stripes, signifying three years’ service overseas after 31 December 1914. He also appears to have a medal ribbon above his left-hand breast pocket. The name and address of the studio that produced this photograph is printed on the reverse: ‘Parker Herbert, 63 London Rd., Derby in Derbyshire, & 32 New Buildings, Hinckley in Leicester’. Handwritten on the right is a note presumably identifying the boy’s parents: ‘Hink & Mrs Hinkley. / Derby. / (Crumb) /. || || Front || Lance Corporal Hinkley and his family || Photograph

The printed details on the reverse of this real photographic postcard tell us that the family pictured on the front visited ‘The Ideal Studios, 514-516 Oxford St., W. London’ in order to be photographed. Seated in a chair, a young mother supports a baby on her lap. Standing to the right is the army child’s father. The two stripes on his left sleeve tell us that he is a corporal, and the badge above them signifies that he is a Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) medical orderly. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a British corporal and his family

A British lance corporal and his family

A small girl sits at the centre of this real photographic postcard flanked by her parents. The single stripe on her soldier–father’s sleeve tells us that he is a lance corporal and he wears a bandolier; the details of his shoulder title are unclear. The rings on her mother’s left hand are notable. There is a message written in black ink on the reverse. It reads, ‘Dear Doris / Just a card to wish you all a Merry Xmas & a Happy & peaceful New Year. / With love, Gladys’. || A real photographic postcard || || A British lance corporal and his wife and daughter || Photograph || Front
