'No gun – no girl!'
Donald McGill drew the scenario on the front of this postcard. Captioned ‘NO GUN – NO GIRL!’, his name can be seen above ‘GIRL!’. To the right is the French equivalent: ‘Pas de fusil – pas de jeune fille!’. The main subject of the postcard is a girl, arm in arm with a British soldier-boy, who is holding out her hand in rejection of a boy dressed in smart civilian clothes holding a bouquet of flowers. The postcard has been addressed in pencil to ‘Miss B. Garlick ? / 74 ? Road / East Dulwich / London S.E.’. The message reads: ‘France / May 30th 16 / Dear Blanche / Your letter to hand tonight many thanks for same, does the other side apply to you / Best love Ant ?. There is a red ‘Passed Field Censor 1720’ stamp. The printed text states ‘Inter-Art Co., Red Lion Square, London. W. C. / “TWO-EIGHT-ONE” Series. No. 288. British manufacture’.

Dudley L Buxton, whose name appears beneath the fence on the right, created the scene on the front of this postcard, which is called ‘No thoughts for the Front!’. It depicts a disgruntled-looking boy with a torn pair of shorts. In front of him lie three apples. In the background, behind a fence, is an apple tree bearing a notice stating ‘Trespassers will be prosecuted’. Spikes have been inserted into the fence, and two have impaled the seat of the boy’s shorts. The printed information on the back states, ‘Inter-Art Co., Florence House, Barnes, London. S W / “COMIQUE” Series. No. 1999. / British Manufacture Throughout’. ‘From Dad at Birkenhead with Best Love and Wishes xxxxxx 1917’ has been written in pencil on the right, under ‘THIS SIDE FOR ADDRESS’. A topical British postcard || An unknown artist has portrayed a crying baby on the front of this postcard. The caption below reads, ‘No Sugar, no Potatoes / no nothing!’. The printed text on the back includes ‘Copyright London’, ‘“CURLY LOCKS” ON SHORT RATIONS’, ‘Raphael Tuck & Sons’ “OILETTE” Postcard No. 3128. / ART PUBLISHERS TO THEIR MAJESTIES THE KING & QUEEN’, and ‘Printed in England’. The postcard has been franked ‘Scarborough then in the North Riding of Yorkshire, 9 AUG 17’. A pencilled hand has addressed it to ‘Mrs Brook / 13 Beechwood View / Busby / Leeds then in the West Riding of Yorkshire’.
