'No gun – no girl!'
Donald McGill drew the scenario on the front of this postcard. Captioned ‘NO GUN – NO GIRL!’, his name can be seen above ‘GIRL!’. To the right is the French equivalent: ‘Pas de fusil – pas de jeune fille!’. The main subject of the postcard is a girl, arm in arm with a British soldier-boy, who is holding out her hand in rejection of a boy dressed in smart civilian clothes holding a bouquet of flowers. The postcard has been addressed in pencil to ‘Miss B. Garlick ? / 74 ? Road / East Dulwich / London S.E.’. The message reads: ‘France / May 30th 16 / Dear Blanche / Your letter to hand tonight many thanks for same, does the other side apply to you / Best love Ant ?. There is a red ‘Passed Field Censor 1720’ stamp. The printed text states ‘Inter-Art Co., Red Lion Square, London. W. C. / “TWO-EIGHT-ONE” Series. No. 288. British manufacture’.
