A British soldier and his daughter photographed in Weston-super-Mare

A real photographic postcard
A soldier and his daughter are pictured in front of a seaside studio backdrop. The soldier is sitting on a chair, while his daughter stands between his legs, clutching his thigh. She is wearing his bandolier and cap (the badge is that of the Royal Engineers) and is holding his riding crop. His visible shoulder title – ‘RE’ – is also that of the Royal Engineers. He is wearing spurs, and the three upward-pointing chevrons on his lower left-hand sleeve indicate twelve years’ long service and good conduct. A message has been written in black ink on the reverse: ‘To Aunty Beaty with best Birthday Wishes from Little Aggie’. The name of the studio that produced this real photographic postcard is printed alongside: ‘Brown & Co., Royal Studio, 21 Regent St., Weston-S-Mare Weston-super-Mare, in Somerset’.

A British soldier and his daughter

1 Item

A real photographic postcard || Both father and daughter look ill at ease in this photograph, which was produced, as is printed on the reverse, by ‘GALE’S STUDIOS LTD / BRANCHES EVERYWHERE’, these being listed as ‘Manchester / Glasgow / Liverpool / Blackpool / Leeds / Nottingham / Birmingham / Leicester / Cardiff / Bristol / Newcastle-on-Tyne / Portsmouth / Sheffield / Etc. Etc.’. The girl wears a mobcap and a light-coloured dress, and stands rather awkwardly on a chair next to her father. He is wearing a British soldier’s uniform and a white lanyard, but his uniform has no other distinguishing features. || || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and his daughter

A separated British soldier and his daughter

1 Item

A real photographic postcard || This poignant photograph depicts a young soldier in a studio setting, holding a document and gazing into space. Inset above is a portrait of a little girl, no doubt his daughter. There is nothing on the front or back of this real photographic postcard to tell us who the girl and her soldier–father are, or where he was pictured. || || A photograph of a British soldier with one of his daughter inset || Photograph || Front

A British soldier and his family photographed in Ilkley

1 Item

A real photographic postcard || Although we do not know the identities of the family pictured on the front of this real photographic postcard, the text in the bottom right-hand corner tells us that they were photographed in Bontoft’s studio in Ilkley (then in the West Riding of Yorkshire). The British army sergeant is pictured looking down at the baby that his wife is holding; his visible shoulder title is illegible. His wife is wearing an ornate hat and a fur scarf, the baby’s long white gown suggests that the photograph commemorates his or her christening. || || Front || Photograph || A British soldier's family
