A British soldier and his family
A real photographic postcard
Three little girls, all dressed in white, pose with their mother and father for their family portrait. The stripe on both sleeves tells us that their soldier–father is a lance corporal, while his white lanyard and cap badge signal that he is serving in the Royal Artillery. Judging by its similarity to her husband’s cap badge, their mother may be wearing a Royal Artillery sweetheart brooch at her throat. There is nothing on the front or back of this real photographic postcard to tell us who the family are, or in which studio they were photographed.

This larger-than-postcard-sized photograph has been glued to the centre of a brown-toned cardboard mount (cropped out here) bearing the details of the photographic studio that produced it: ‘USA STUDIOS’, ‘London W & Provincial Branches’. The solemn-looking family pictured comprises two young girls, dressed alike in white, with ribbons in their hair, their mother and their soldier–father. || A photograph || || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and his family

The small child sitting on the table on the right of this photograph must have moved while it was being taken because her face is a little blurry. Her soldier–father stands behind her, while her mother sits on the left, holding what appears to be a newspaper. No information is given on either the front or back of this real photographic postcard to help us identify either the family or the photographic studio that produced their portrait. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and family

A real photographic postcard || This real photographic postcard shows six children, who have been photographed with their parents in a garden setting. The oldest girl has been given the central seat, while three of her younger siblings have lined up alongside her and their parents. Their mother holds a baby, and their soldier–father, a toddler. The outline of his cap badge resembles that of the Essex Regiment. There is nothing on either the front or back of this family photograph to indicate where it was taken, or the family’s identity. || || A photograph of a British soldier and his family || Photograph
