Chrisostomos Sofras was born in 1885 in Melissochori in the vicinity of Thessaloniki (Baldja) and died in Thessaloniki in 1969. Grandfather of Orestis Kalogirou, from his mother side, the 9th child of a village family. He studied Medicine in Athens University (1905-1911). Returning in Baldja he took part in the Macedonian Struggle from the Greek side. During the Great War he served as a reserve officer (military doctor). He holds the rank of first lieutenant, although he was not a career officer. In this photo doctors, Red Cross nurses, stretcher bearers, and probably a soldier back left of the 2nd Military Hospital of Thessaloniki (1913-1919). The three-story building was built in 1887 according to designs by Vitaliano Poselli. This particular building was intended to house one of the municipal educational establishments which were founded, mainly at the end of 19th century, in the capital cities of the prefectures of the Ottoman state for the education of government servants and to prepare students for the entrance exams which would get them into the higher schools (Idadiye). After 1912, the Idadiye of Thessaloniki housed the military hospital and after 1927 the University. It was used again as a military hospital between 1941 and 1944 and subsequently reverted to the University. Today it is the main building of the Philosophical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In this photo Chrisostomos Kalogirou is at the left of the central female figure. After the Great War he worked as a private doctor in Thessaloniki and as a doctor for theb Greek Railways (ΣΕΚ).
