Framed photo and letter POW
Large framed photograph, Letter from King George
Reginald (Reg) Lewis was taken prisoner on 22nd June 1917, Gillemont Farm. Was POW for most of the war. Never talked to anyone about it.
Came back 'a skeleton'.
Received a hand-written letter from King George on release from captivity, on Buckingham Palace-headed paper. The letter says:
1918 The queen joins me in welcoming you on your release from the miseries & hardships which you have endured with so much patience & courage. During these many months of trial the early rescue of our gallant officers & men from the cruelties of their captivity has been uppermost in our thoughts. We are thankful that this longed for day has arrived, and that back in the old country you will be able once more to enjoy the happiness of a home & to see good days among those who anxiously look for your return.\n
Became a baker and confectioner in Bodicote.
There was a letter but now lost. Interviewed by Oxford Mail at reunions QOOH newsletter 10 May 1990 obituary
