A boy photographed in Gateshead dressed as a British soldier

The printed details on the back of this photographic postcard showing a boy dressed as a British soldier give the name of the photographer who produced it: ‘J. Bambridge, Photographer, 197, High St., Gateshead.’. Gateshead was in County Durham at the time of the First World War, which means that the boy’s cap badge is almost certainly that of the Durham Light Infantry.

A small boy dressed as a British soldier.

1 Item

This photograph has not aged well, particularly not the top half, including the face of the small boy who is the subject of this photograph. He is wearing a replica British soldier’s uniform, complete with ‘medal ribbons’, gloves and swagger stick. He has been photographed in a studio setting, and rests his left arm on a child-sized chair. There is nothing on the reverse to tell us who he is, or where he was photographed. Even if he is far too young to be the real thing, he looks delighted to be dressed as a British Army soldier, maybe wishing to emulate his father and/or other older male relatives. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a boy dressed as a British soldier

A small boy dressed as a British soldier.

1 Item

Apart from an apparent code stating ‘B2.6’, there is nothing printed on the back of this postcard to tell us in which photographic studio the small boy pictured on the front posed for his photograph. He has been dressed for the occasion in an approximation of a British soldier’s uniform, a white lanyard and toy rifle being notable details. The outline of his cap badge resembles the shape formed by the combined sphinx and wreath of the Gloucestershire Regiment’s ‘back badge’. || A photographic postcard. || || A photographic postcard with a photograph of a boy dressed as a British soldier. || Photograph

A girl dressed as a British soldier

2 Items

Embossed on this photographic postcard is the name of the photographic studio, ‘E C Watling, 33, Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, SE London’. Presumably dressed up in her soldier–father’s trench cap and kit, the small girl wears a leather bandolier, water bottle and what looks like a haversack; the rifle is no doubt a toy prop. The cap badge is indistinct, but may be that of the Royal Artillery. || A photographic postcard showing a girl dressed as a British soldier photographed at a photographer's studio in Bermondsey, London. || || 51.49791140000001,-0.06617240000002766 || Photograph of a girl dressed as a British soldier. || Photograph || || Photograph of a girl dressed as a British soldier. || Photograph
