August 1st marriage
My Grandparents were married on Saturday August 1st 1914. On the Tuesday they had their ouwboek, a marriage book, issued by a local government official who signed it and stamped it on behalf of the Cappellen town council. The date he wrote down was August 4th. I will never know whether my grandparents knew when they received their book that their country, Belgium, had that day been invaded by German troops.
On August 5th they were given this postcard by Lieutenant Desmeolt. On the postcard one of my grandparents has written that he fell on October 23rd 1918. They would have found this out from a book listing all the Belgian Army killed. I remember finding this book in the attic when I visited the family home in the early 1960s.
In December they were allowed to travel to Brussels, presumably to visit family at Christmas. To do this they both needed a German travel pass.

Daniel J. Daly | Acting Corporal | 1st King’s Liverpool Regiment
2 Items
My maternal grandfather, Daniel Daly from Ireland was a regular soldier – an acting corporal. He took part in WWI and was stationed in France. He was gassed in the trenches, but survived. Daniel came from a strong republican background but he himself was not a republican. His aunt, whose husband, John McCann, was Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1946 to 1947, bought him out of the army twice. They never wanted to acknowledge that a relative of theirs had served in the British Army. He eventually re-enlisted for the third time. He joined the Liverpool regiment and was in India before World War I. He was gassed in the trenches but survived. Daniel Daly was employed by Messrs Guinness as a security man at St. James’s Gate after the war. He died in 1944. || Photograph of Daniel J.
