A British corporal's family.
A photograph of a British corporal's family.
Three children and their parents are the subjects of this photograph, which was taken in an unidentified studio and printed on a postcard backing. The two stripes, or chevrons, on the soldier–father’s sleeve tell us that he is a corporal. He also wears a bandolier, a white lanyard and a wedding ring.

A British soldier's family.

This studio portrait has been printed on a postcard back, whose printed information includes the details ‘British Made’ and ‘1045’. A young girl, dressed smartly in white, stands next to her seated mother and in front of her soldier–father. Her mother’s hatpin and jewellery are notable, particularly the brooch pinned to her collar and the heart-shaped locket that hangs below it. The ring on her soldier–father’s wedding finger is also discernible, as is a dark lanyard. His cap badge appears to be that of the Essex Regiment. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and his family

There is nothing written on the back of this real photographic postcard to tell us where it was taken or who the subjects on the front are. What is clear, however, is that the family pictured has been separated as a result of the soldier–father’s military service. He is depicted sitting by a table, apparently reading a letter. His boots are well worn; he lacks puttees; and his hands look rather grubby. There appears to be a medal ribbon above his left-hand breast pocket, and the two stripes on his right sleeve tell us that he is a corporal. His cap rests under the table, by his right foot; the cap badge resembles that of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in shape. Inset in the top right-hand corner is a photograph of his somberly dressed wife and hat-wearing children, photographed in another photographer’s studio. || A real photographic postcard combining two photographs. || || A composite photograph of a separated soldier's family || Photograph

Posed against an ornate backdrop, a small boy and his parents appear to be looking warily at the viewer. It is notable that the boy’s soldier–father is wearing a white lanyard and a well-worn uniform. This real photographic postcard is slightly damaged, and has no written details giving us the family members’ names or that of the photographic studio that produced this image. || A real photographic postcard. || || A real photographic postcard of a British soldier and his family || Photograph
