Telegram Hostilities Cease at 11am today
My father Lt Robert John Liddle MC (known to the family as Bob) served in the Cameroonians regiment and was originally from Dumfries. He survived the war but didn't talk about his war time experiences.
He had a suitcase in which he kept special objects – a sort of treasure box - which I inherited but didn't really look at in any detail while my father was alive. After Bob died, I found a telegram which my father had kept safely in the treasure box. My father served with the 19th Infantry Brigade and received the telegram that was sent to his brigade from the 33rd Division on 11th November 1918 advising that hostilities would cease at 11am on that day.
My father's wife came from Yorkshire and the family believe that one of her mother’s uncles travelled to Dumfries through their connections with the wool trade and that this is how they came to meet.
Copy of telegram sent advising that hostilities would cease on 11/11/1918; military cross and letter, campaign medals.
