Badge for 20th Anniversary for the raising of the first recruits in Southern Serbia
1 Item
This 1934 badge was to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the raising of recruits for the Serbian Army in Serbia's southern, Macedonia province. In the First Balkan War (1912), the alliance of Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania expelled most of the Ottoman Empire from the region, and Macedonia was absorbed into Serbia. The main part of the badge shows a Serbian soldier guarding the Stone Bridge in the Macedonian town of Skoplje. The text is in Serbian Cyrillic, and reads '20 ГОДИШЊИЦА ПРВИХ РЕГРУТА ЈУЖНE СРБИЈE - СКОПЉЕ' (transliterates to '20 Godisnjica Prvih Regruta Juzne Srbije - Skople', and translates to '20th Anniversary of the First Recruits in South Serbia - Skople'). On the 14 and 15 April 1914, the first recruits from South Serbia - the 'liberated' Macedonia - were sworn in to the Serbian Army. In 1934, a parade of surviving veterans was organised and went through the town of Skoplje. A 30 minute film of this can be found on the Europeana 1914-1918 website under the title of 'Proslava ratniku Juzne Srbije u Skoplju' (translating as 'Celebrating the warriors of South Serbia in Skopje'). || Badge commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the raising of recruits in South Serbia.

Two films setting the scene in the museum || I took these films to show the general scene of the Great War Centenary Exhibition (Arddangosfa Canmlwyddiant y Rhyfel Mawr) 1914-2014 at the Radnorshire Museum (Amgueddfa Sir Faesyfed), Llandrindod from August 2014. It shows an example of a small but excellent commemoration of the First World War in a rural Welsh town. In particular, there are artefacts, stories and photos of men and women from the area who went to war. Additionally there is the interesting tale of some of the RAMC soldiers (Royal Army medical Corps) who came to the training hospital set up in Llandrindod Wells. A couple of low res photos to set the scene as well, of a panel of exhibits about William Price-Davies, and a photo of Kate Clare - a Land Girl. || || A photo from the exhibition of Kate Clare, land girl at who worked at Dderw and at Tynpistyll, Cwmdauddwr near Rhayader. || Women || Photograph || Kate Clare, land girl at Tynpistyll farm, Cwmdauddwr near Rhayader || 52.296294,-3.519700000000057 || Home Front || Kate Clare || || William Price-Davies || Western Front || 52.24169999999999,-3.377742000000012 || Group of photos and interpretive boards about William Price-Davies, origially of Llandrindod Wells.
