My Grandfather, Dr. Giovanni Lo Pinto, was born 23 Apr 1875, Palermo Italy, lived in Bagheria, and died 20 Aug 1963, Palermo Italy. Dr Giovanni studied in Napoli, and he and my nonna, Anna GRASSI of Napoli (born 7 Nov 1875, Naples, IT. - died 11 Jul 1954, NJ, USA) immigrated to the USA in 1899. He became a citizen in 1904, but had to be repatriated after returning from serving in the Italian Army during WW1. He returned as a Major in 1919.
A cousin in Roma sent me photos, proof that my Grandfather (nonno), Dr. Giovanni Lo Pinto, served in the Italian Army from 1913 to the end of the war. Though he was an American Citizen, he left for Italy soon after the war began and enlisted in the Italian Army. Yet, while the war ended in Nov 1918, he did not return to America until 22 May 1919, on the SS Francesca. All 27 passengers passages on the second page of this Ship Manuscript, were paid by he Italian Government including the women. Of those, about 13 persons occupations were changed to military ranks, perhaps when the transcriber of that page found their passage was paid for by the Italian Government.
Dr Giovanni came to America in 1899, but he went back to Italy from 1900 to 1913, about every other year, return to America, and go back again. I am very curious to know is if he had joined or served in the Italian Army before World War 1, since he would often stay in Italy for several years. I also do not know where he served or what regiment he was attached to during that war. I also wonder if he returned to Italy, either to continue his military service after 1920.
