Inset to the right is a head-and-shoulders portrait of an absorbed-looking British soldier. In the main scene below, the soldier’s wife sits by a table on which stands a photograph. She holds her mending in her hands, but is staring into space, towards the soldier’s photograph. Their daughter sits on the floor, apparently reading to the doll that she is cradling. The main portion of this postcard shows a woman sitting in a deckchair outside a house, her daughter perched in her lap, with the girl’s doll on the ground beside them. They appear to be reading a letter or looking at a photograph (perhaps of the British soldier whose portrait is inset above). The scene is titled ‘A Message of Love Daddy’, and the verse alongside reads: ‘Sitting at the Cottage door / Thinking of you far away / Our love for you grows more and more / And for your safe return we pray’.
