‘Loving Thoughts of Dad.’ is the title of this postcard, which shows three children gazing at a photograph of a man in uniform. The text beneath reads, ‘We miss you, Daddy, ever so, / But you are out to fight the foe ; / Oh, we would be brave soldiers too, / And grow up, Daddy, just like you.’. Two vignettes depicting a snowy village scene surrounded by mistletoe sprigs decorate the top of this postcard. At the bottom is a hand-drawn portrait of a British soldier flanked by the flags of Belgium, Britain, France and Russia. The message at the top reads, ‘To Dear Father With Love.’. The poem below, headed ‘Loving Thoughts this Christmastide.’, reads, ‘Loving thoughts and loving greetings / Once more we send this Christmas day, / And we sit at home and wonder / How you fare, so far away. / For badly we miss your footsteps, / How gladly we would welcome you, dear, / But patiently here we await you / And pray that our reunion be near.’. The name of the author of the poem, ‘Helen Barber’, appears below. There is a message on the reverse, written in black ink in a childish hand: ‘Dear Daddie / wishing you a happy xmas / with fondest love from Gladys.’. A British sentimental postcard || A verse has been printed in the top left-hand corner of this postcard. Headed ‘Thoughts of Daddy.’, it reads: ‘I think of you dear Daddy / Through all the long, long days, / And for your quick & safe return / Your little Girlie prays.’. Inset to the right is a head-and-shoulders portrait of an absorbed-looking British soldier. In the main scene below, the soldier’s wife sits by a table on which stands a photograph. She holds her mending in her hands, but is staring into space, towards the soldier’s photograph. Their daughter sits on the floor, apparently reading to the doll that she is cradling. A child is shown praying on the front of this photographic postcard, beneath an inset portrait of a soldier. Printed to the soldier’s left is the following verse: ‘Thoughts of Daddy. / I think of you dear Daddy, / Through all the long, long days, / And for your quick and safe return / Your little Girlie prays.’. The printed information on the back reads: ‘All British Production’, ‘Series No 497-1’, and ‘Printed in England’.
