Fritz Herbel aus Bochum war eines von zwölf Kindern, von denen alle zehn Jungen im Ersten Weltkrieg eingezogen wurden. Die Familie stammte ursprünglich aus dem westfälischen Letmathe (Iserlohn). Fritz wurde 1914 in das II. Rekruten-Depot des Infanterie-Regiments Vogel von Falckenstein (7. Westfälisches) Nr. 56 in Friedrichsfeld bei Wesel eingezogen und an die Westfront beordert. Er war verheiratet und hatte zwei Kinder. Nach dem Krieg war er bei der Firma Krupp beschäftigt.

Fritz Theodore Vogel, grandfather of the contributor, was an Austrian national who worked as a waiter at the Strand Palace Hotel, London between 1909-1914. He was married to Grace McKendrick and they had 3 children. Fritz was interred in 1914 and repatriated in 1915 to Vienna, Austria.
