Christmas gift given to York servicemen in 1914. The postcard was written by my Great Grandfather Charles Arthur Remington who was born in 1886 and died in the 1930s. The photograph shows him in his military uniform. The postcard transcription is as follows: Dear Sis sic, Received your present of chocolate quite safe, which I thank you very much indeed for I will take great care of box in remembrance of your kindness A Remington 21-1-15 5491 Shoeing Smith A. Remington D Squadron Royal Horse Guards Blue 8th Cavalry Brigade 3rd Cavalry Division British Expeditionary Force Post marked: 23-1-15\n The chocolate tin was presented by the Mayor and Sheriff (Oscar Rowntree) of York to him, one of many soldiers from York who received this gift for Christmas 1914.
