Joshua Stanley Wright and Eleanor Wright
Sheet of photos of Stanley Wright
This story is about my parents-in law, Joshua Stanley (known as Stanley) and Eleanor Wright (nee Burn).
Stanley was born in 1898 at Womersley and elisted as a 16-year old in the Royal Horse Artillery. He trained at Wentworth Woodhouse, Rotherham and Salisbury Plain. He was promoted to sergeant in 1916 and sent to France (St Amand and in action near La Bassee.). In August he was wounded on Leuze battleground and was shipped back to England. He recovered and became a 2nd Leiutenant and was posted to 14th Brigade RHA, holding the south bank of the River Piave, north east of Venice for 6 weeks. He was called back to France to help the 5th Army section and was continually in action until the Armistice. He was awarded the military cross and bar.
He went back to France after the war with the army to help with further work.
In 1922 Stanley married Eleanor Wright (nee Burn) who originated from Jarrow. She had enrolled in 1917 with the Queen Mary's Army Auxilary Corps after taking a course in shorthand and typing. She was posted as a Secretary to a Rest Camp in Dieppe - but also helped out in the Bakery. She met Stanley on the beach at Boulogne while on leave in September 1918.
