A British army officer and his family
A real photographic postcard
This real photographic postcard was produced by ‘Gale’s Studios Ltd / Branches Everywhere’, as the logo on the back proclaims, a claim that is backed up by the list of cities printed on the left: ‘Manchester / Glasgow / Liverpool / Blackpool / Leeds / Nottingham / Birmingham / Leicester / Cardiff / Bristol / Newcastle-on-Tyne / Portsmouth / Sheffield / Etc. Etc.’. There is also a message written by hand in black ink on the back: ‘This is the photo I was going to send you in France’. The unnamed family pictured on the front comprises a young boy, his older sister and their parents. Their soldier–father wears a Sam Browne belt, indicating that he is an officer (his tunic buttoned at the neck is of the older style replaced in 1912 with an open-neck version), while the medal ribbons above his left-hand breast pocket suggest that he is a regular soldier.

A real photographic postcard || Pictured in a studio setting on the front of this real photographic postcard are a British soldier, his wife and their daughter. The little girl is wearing an elaborate white dress, with a white ribbon in her hair. She is standing next to her mother, who is wearing a long necklace. Her soldier–father’s visible shoulder title says ‘RE’, telling us that he is serving in the Royal Engineers. The three stripes on his upper left sleeve, with a flaming grenade above, confirm that he is a sergeant in the Royal Engineers. The name and address of the studio in which the family is pictured is printed on the back: ‘E. VAN TROLGA’S STUDIOS. / Clapham Junction–Putney–Clapham in London & Southampton in Hampshire’. || || Photograph || Front

A real photographic postcard || The name of the photographer that produced this photograph, which has been printed with a wide margin (cropped out here) on a postcard back, has been stamped on the back: ‘H. Close’. Four children and their parents posed, flanked by pot plants and trellises, apparently in an outdoor setting, in order for their family photograph to be taken. The children’s soldier–father is a sergeant, and medal ribbons are visible above his left-hand tunic pocket. || || Front || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and his family
