Louis Gill | Royal Horse Artillery
Louis joined up aged 19 and served for the whole of the war. Prior to that Louis was a professional cricketer/printer. He joined the Royal Horse Artillery and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and issued with his own horse called Teacake. The postcard of Monas Queen shows the Isle of Man steam packet on which he was transported to France.
Louis contracted gum disease during his time at the front, and had his teeth extracted without anesthesia, with only a bottle of whisky to ease his suffering!
Louis was very much affected by the war and lost his joy of life, his family reported a noticable change in character on his return.

Photographs of Robert Maxwell with family and with horses; certificates and other documentation; handwritten poem called The Parting Rosary. || Robert Maxwell was my Grandfather. He was born in 1887 and served in the Royal Artillery in WWI He had a totla of 14 children and was married 3 times. The fmaily story is that Robert was driving horses and mules. He was caught in heavy shelling and his animals were killed but he had a lucky escape! He worked for the Guinness brewery in Dublin and died in 1956.

This story relates to Edward Allison, my husband's father. He came from Scagglethorpe, near Malton, Yorkshire. This is all we know about him. He died in about 1942. He was invalided out of the army, but I don't know why or when. The Victory Medal inscription provides his service number as 252385 and identifies him as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. || Victory Medal

An informal group photograph in front of bell tents, James Torrins with colleagues. And a formal group photograph of The Royal Field Artillery, A sub section, with mascot. Torrins was assigned to look after the mascot and horses. What I do remember about my grandfather (James Torrins) is that he was wounded in France and got discharged. He kept the shrapnel, but I can't find it! James Torrins enlisted 18 May 1915 in the Royal Field Artillery, and was wounded in France and discharged on 24 November 1917. || 2 Royal Field Artillery photographs || || Photograph || James Torrins
