Private William Manfred Unwin

This story relates to Private William Manfred Unwin, 2nd 6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regt). The letter is written to the family of Private Unwin in response to an enquiry from them. It gives an eye witness account of his death, when a shell exploded on 21st March 1918, in the Support Trench, near Number 11 post, in the Moray Sector. The contributor researched this information and the name of the sector appears to be incorrect. The officer writing the letter states that unless the family have heard from their son as a Prisoner of War, then he is presumed killed. He is remembered at the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais. Private Unwin was an ancestor of the contributor’s wife's brother-in-law. He was the son of Paul and Harriet Unwin, 45 Eyre St, Hasland, Chesterfield and was just 28 when he died. There is a war diary for the company, where he is recorded as the only casualty that night.
