Emmanuel Barnett 14th Bn Essex Regt.
Emmanuel Barnett, of the 14th Battalion Essex Regiment, was the father of the contributor (Marian Dweck May Barnett). He lied about his age to join up. He said he was 20 but was actually 17 (proved by census information).
He only began to talk about the war in the 1950s. His story came out at the time of the film of Lawrence of Arabia. Barnett's unit was rescued/supported by T.E. Lawrence. The whole family were tailors from the East End of London. They moved to Oxford at the time of World War 2 and Barnett worked at a pressed steel company making ammunition. He died in 1975.
The photos contributed include a photo of Barnett in uniform and a photo of him in later life.
