The contributor's grandfather, Charles Henry Betts, also known as Harry, was born on 25th August 1885. He enlisted, but the documentary evidence gives conflicting dates. One states 8th June 1916, but the certificate transferring him to the reserves on demobilisation, states that he enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps on 11th December 1915. He served with the Royal Flying Corps, 1915/1916?-1919, and was stationed in Caldiero, near Venice, on the Italian front - 9th Balloon Company RAF, Corporal, Air Mechanic. He was demobbed from Blandford Forum and possibly trained there. Charles Henry Betts survived the war and died on 21st January 1966. The contributor brought numerous photographs, letters, RAF documentation, bills, aerial photographs and medals. The medals are nicknamed Pipsqueak and Wilfred - these are replacement medals as the originals were lost. They are engraved on the edge with Royal Flying Corps, Harry's service number and name. || Photograph of Charles Henry Betts.
