VAD Nurse Violet
Violet Alicia Aplin was the mother of Hugh Hinde who submitted this story. She was born on 25 December 1899 and during the war was in the VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment)in London looking after wounded soldiers. She was 18 at the end of the war. In 1924 she married John Hinde (the Aplin and Hinde families knew one another) and they had three children, John born in 1926, Rosemary born in 1928 and Hugh born in 1936.

Eileen M. Sheehan, Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse, was born 1897 as eldest daughter of RMF Captain DD Sheehan MP. She joined the VAD organisation in 1916 and served as nurse and ambulance driver on the front. Attached to the 14th Military and General Hospital at Wimereux, north east France, she was disabled in a German bombing raid and hospitalised in Boulogne. Traumatized by militant intimidations experienced at the end of the war in her Cork family home, she spent her last years in an Epson, Surrey sanatorium (still convinced “they are outside waiting to get me”).

May Benson, a cousin of my husband, was born in Paris to an English family in 1892. During the war, May was trained by the Red Cross to become a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse at Cornwall Hall Hospital in Sevenoaks, Kent. May's father was Head Lad to Harry Andrews, a racehorse trainer in France. During her time at Cornwall Hall, May collected poems, drawings and messages from the soldiers she treated. According to one of the historians at the WW1 Roadshow in Wantage, her VAD nurse book is one of the best he has ever seen. It is believed May also volunteered as a VAD at the start of World War II. || These include an autograph book kept by May and a series of postcards mainly from World War I and two from World War II.
