George Bower joined up in 1914 and survived until September 1918, just 11 weeks before the end of the war. He wrote regularly to his wife Minnie. Objects contributed consist of correspondence, photographs of George Bower, the Death Penny and three medals (1914/15 Star, Victory Medal, 1914-1918 Medal). || Death Penny Correspondence Medals Photographs
A British soldier's family
1 Item
A photograph of a British soldier, his wife and their baby. || The subjects of this photograph are a baby, apparently wearing a white christening gown, and his or her parents. The mother’s wedding ring is prominently displayed, but while the soldier–father’s white lanyard is visible, his shoulder titles are too indistinct to make out. ‘REF NO K946’ has been written in ink on the back of the photograph, which has not been printed on a postcard mount. || || Home Front || A photograph of a British soldier and his family. || Photograph
A separated soldier's family
1 Item
A real photographic postcard || There is nothing on either the front or back of this real photographic postcard to help us identify the family depicted on it, or the studio in which the British soldier was photographed. He is shown sitting at a table, in front of a backdrop painted to resemble a country scene, apparently writing a letter to his wife and son. Their portrait has been inserted in the top left-hand corner. It is likely that the boy has a badge based on his father’s cap badge pinned to his lapel. || || Photograph || A postcard combining photographs of a British soldier and his family
