He was quickly promoted to Corporal, with Service Number 15645, in the 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.
As a Patrol Sergeant at Lesboeufs on 16th September 1916, he distinguished himself when confronted by a German offensive. For this he was awarded the DCM for Gallantry. Soon afterwards, he was promoted to Warrant Officer, as a Company Sergeant Major (CSM) in the 7th Battalion DCLI.
On the 31st September 1918, Ted was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal West Surrey Regiment (The Queens Regiment). On leaving the service, at the end of the war, his Commanding Officer described him as a keen, reliable and fearless, good leader.
