Framed certificate of honourable discharge given to Private Edward Langton
Framed certificate of honourable discharge given to Private Edward Langton(sometimes known as the King's Certificate), designed by John Bernard Partridge (1861-1945), chief cartoonist of 'Punch' magazine who also designed the WWI recruitment poster entitled 'Take up the sword of justice'; knighted 1925. Text reads: ‘30358 Private Edward Langton / 2nd Platoon A Company / Served with honour and was disable d in the Great War / honourably discharged on 4th April 1918 / signed George R. J. 'Bernard Partridge M.cm.xvj (1916)'. Certificate depicts Britannia enthroned; in front two soldiers stand to attention. At head is a pediment supporting the royal coat of arms with cherubs blowing trumpets, framed by foliate and architectural motifs; flanking columns have banners of the British Empire and colonies. Originally rolled up until Noel Langton took it to a framer in 1966.
