Maps and Mementoes
Shadbolt family photos; a pig/Kaiser paper puzzle; handkerchief sachet with handkerchief inside; postcards from France; On Active Service envelope with pressed flower inside; 6 folding trench maps (and a pdf containing all the images).
These are photographs of my family, the Shadbolts. They show William, George, and William John. They all went to war and all came back. This photo also includes Tom, my Dad Jim, and John Thomas.
The photo of George and his family was probably taken during the war, as he is wearing uniform. The brothers all worked for a photographer, which might explain the quality of the pictures.
There is a photo/postcard of a relation by marriage, Ernest Morris (who added an extra s to his name, so is known as Ernest Morriss). He signed up, possibly under-age at 17, in 1916.
There is also a photo of my grandfather George Robinson, who came back from war. He was a baker for the troops. He used to say that he was up to his thighs in mud baking just behind the lines. He said it was very difficult.
This is my grandfather's paper puzzle which shows some pigs, with the phrase 'where is the fifth?'. If you fold the paper correctly, the fifth image is a picture of the Kaiser.
I also have my grandfather's collection of postcards, most of which are blank. Some of them are embroidered. I have a lot of photos of England and Rouen.
There is also a photo of the four brothers of the Sims family, an uncle. The second from the right, Lindon Sims, didn't come back, but the others did.
The embroidered handkerchief sachet has a lace handkerchief enclosed, captioned 'a kiss from France.' It was brought back from France during the war for my mother, Dorothy Robinson. She never used it so it is in pristine condition.
The 'On Active Service' envelope was official issue, and contains a pressed flower.
