A British patriotic postcard.
‘“Chums”’ is the title emblazoned across this photographic postcard, beneath which a British soldier and a young girl are shown in an affectionate embrace. The beaming girl is wearing her ‘chum’s’ cap at a rakish angle; its cap badge is probably that of the Essex Regiment. Below the pair is written the following verse: ‘Two gallant Tommies here you see / For dangers neither cares a rap, / We’ll meet the foe, where’er he be, / With soldier heart and soldier cap.’ The information printed on the reverse of the postcard, under the heading ‘TUCK’S POST CARD / CARTE POSTALE.’, includes the following details: ‘“I love a Lassie.” / Raphael Tuck & Sons’ “Hand-coloured Photogravure” Postcard. No. 4258 / ART PUBLISHERS TO THEIR MAJESTIES THE KING & QUEEN.’ and ‘Printed in England.’
